Cloth art

2010-11-18 00:00

AN exhibition of hand-coloured cotton fabrics by Wendy Bloy and Jutta Faulds, titled Art Cloth: Cloth By The Yard, can be viewed at Midlands Arts and Crafts Society (Macs) House at 23 Haldane Road in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday at 10 am.

There will be a wide variety of cloth in cotton, viscose, linen and silk, which has been made into scarves, tablecloths, bedspreads and more. The cloth has been resist-dyed, discharged, printed, over-printed and stenciled to make it unique, colourful, patterned and beautiful.

Bloy and Faulds have also invited artists operating with the Carnegie Art Gallery in Newcastle to show their block-printed fabrics. The artists are part of the Senzokhule project and were initially taught hand-printing techniques using found objects by Faulds and Sue Physick in a five-day National Arts Council funded workshop, and a sewing course to learn how to finish off their work.

Bloy and Faulds will also be hosting a “Dye Your Own Cotton Scarf or Bandana” workshop on November 25, from 9 am to noon. This is a free workshop for cancer patients who are having chemotherapy treatment or people who know someone being treated. Cloth, dyes, knowledge and enthusiasm will be supplied.
