Club champs: Positive start for Rovers

2008-09-07 00:00

College Rovers got their 2008 SAA National Club Rugby Championship programme off on the right foot when they beat Border champions Buffaloes 45-26, outscoring the side from East London by seven tries to two after leading 24-10 at the break.

If Rovers were supposedly rusty after four weeks of inactivity, it certainly didn’t show. They soon clicked into gear, revelling in the try feast with their forwards and backs linking well, while showing little signs of their lack of match practice. Their next match, needless to say, will be a lot tougher as they meet the winners of the match between Tukkies and SK Walmer.

Their seven tries came from centre Jared Nash, flank Justin Downey, wing Wesley Bodmer, No. 8 ‘Bones’ Nkwelo, centre Riaan Swanepoel, wing Malusi Zuma and scrumhalf Neil Cole, with flyhalf Andrew Borgen (2) fullback Chris Jordaan (2) and replacement Chris Mickelwood (1) sharing the conversions.
