Club hockey: Pinetown meet PMB Varsity

2008-07-24 00:00

THERE is a busy round of premier club hockey fixtures this weekend, but precious few matches likely to be even contests.

The best is probably that between KZN Men’s Super League leaders, Maritzburg Varsity, and Pinetown at 11 am on Sunday at the AB Jackson GreenFields Turf.

Varsity, without Beijing Olympics-bound player/coach Darryn Gallagher and 2007 SA Player of the Year Tommy Hammond, did extremely well to come back from the dead to draw 4-4 with second-placed Durban Varsity at Glenwood on Tuesday night.

Succeeding without their lynchpins will give PMB Varsity confidence going into the second half of the season as they bid to wrest the coveted KZN club champions crown from struggling titleholders and 2007 SA Club Champs winners DUT Rovers.

PMB Varsity were unlucky to miss out on that SA Club Champions title in a heart-stopping finale to that tournament at the ABJ in September last year, but in Pinetown on Sunday morning they will encounter a much improved team that is unlikely to bend without a fight.

The rest of the matches are likely to deliver lopsided results that provide little of benefit to victor or vanquished.

Saturday – KZN Midlands Women’s Prem (at ABJ): CD vs Coll B (4 pm); Var B vs GHS Old Girls A (5.45 pm).

Sunday - KZN Men’s Super League: PMB Varsity vs Pinetown (11 am ABJ); Durban North I vs DN II (2.30 pm Riverside); Rovers vs PMB Collegians (Queensmead 2 pm); D Varsity vs Kearsney (Q 3.30 pm). KZN Women’s Prem (at Q): Kears vs D North II (9.30 am); D Coll vs Rovers I (11 am); Rovers II vs D Var (12.30 pm).
