Club rugby: Collegians and Midlands shine

2008-03-05 00:00

THERE were indications in Empangeni over the weekend that Maritzburg club rugby is set for a productive year.

First Division club Maritzburg Collegians, boosted by R132 000 for the season from loyal sponsors Gestetner, met Premier Division club the North Coast Rhinos in pre-season friendlies and came away with their heads held high.

Collegians firsts, trailing 13-6 and with scrumhalf Francois Lubbe and lock Juan Vosloo prominent, spent the last quarter camped in the Moor Cup side’s 22, according to chairman Tony Day, “but we couldn’t convert and they broke away to score under the poles for a 20-6 win”, he said.

The Collegians seconds, with flyhalf Nick Dewing and lock Righardt Kotze catching the eye, were

21-0 up with 25 minutes left, said Day, “but the Rhinos ran in four tries from that point to win

The Midlands U20 teams travelled to Empangeni alongside the Collegians senior squads and coach Ralph Cawood’s U20B line-up ran in 12 tries to beat the Rhinos 73-0 with Siyabonga Mdluli standing out among the forwards and Shane Driemeyer among the backs.

Coach Steve Botha’s lower-ranked Midlands U20As played the team that finished third in the U20A Division last year.

However, the bigger, more experienced Rhinos could not hold on to a 12-0 lead as the Pietermaritzburg-based side came back strongly in the last quarter to win 14-12 with skipper and frontranker Blake Kyd plus blindside flank Justin Smith shining among the forwards and replacement right wing Jarred Cairns earning the accolades in the backline.
