Club rugby a clash of titans this weekend

2014-08-21 00:00

LOCAL club rugby will see the top four teams in the Murray Cup knockout tournament battle it out in tomorrow night’s semi-finals.

Last weekend saw several big matches and heartbreak for some, as happens in knockout tournaments.

College Rovers and Durban Collegians met in a huge derby on the weekend that saw Rovers edge out this year’s Moor Cup league champions in a hard-fought match.

No tries were scored, highlighting how evenly matched the sides were. Rovers fullback Jors Dannhauser’s three penalties gave them a 9-6 win in a match that saw extra time.

Meanwhile, Premier division newcomers Amanzimtoti continued their impressive season, beating UKZN Impi 51-21 infront of their home crowd at Hutchison Park. There was a notable effort from Toti prop Thinus Volker, who scored a hat-trick and was voted man of the match.

Northwood Crusaders demolished the only First division team in the quarter-finals – Richards Bay – by 76-3, while Varsity College ran out 46-13 winners over Maritzburg Collegians. Crusaders also had hat-trick heroes in flyhalf Cameron Dunlop and wing Charlie Mayeza.

With the winners progressing, attention turned to the final draw for semi-final fixtures that took place on Monday night.

College Rovers will host Varsity College at King’s Park 3 on Friday night, while Amanzimtoti will look to their home ground advantage as they drew Crusaders.

These are two big matches that will no doubt serve up another round of exciting knockout club rugby.
