Club rugby hits the ground running with 40-minute matches

2009-08-27 00:00

THE number two and three rugby fields at Woodburn, as well as the Varsity Stadium off Golf Road are the venues for the next round of the Inter Sub-Unions regional club rugby competition tomorrow evening.

The tournament is made up of four 40-minute games with each sub-union — at senior and U21 level — playing against the other four sub-unions.

The KZN rugby sub-unions are Midlands, Durban, Zululand, Southern KZN and Northern Natal — and the Ebbo Bastard Trophy is at stake.

Midlands Marauders enjoyed a successful first round, the senior side drawing 13-13 with Durban and beating Southern KZN 18-0, while the U21 team beat Durban 15-10 and Southern Natal 7-3.

The 40-minute matches are an interesting departure from the normal 80-minute rugby clash, forcing teams to launch themselves from the starting blocks immediately, while fitness and stamina are tested with back-to-back encounters.

Tomorrow, the senior segment of the Ebbo Bastard takes place at Woodburn with the U21 teams at Varsity.

Woodburn 2: Southern KZN vs Durban (7 pm); Zululand vs Durban (7.45 pm); Midlands vs Northern KZN (8.30 pm).

Woodburn 3: Midlands vs Zululand (7 pm); Northern KZN vs Southern KZN (7.45 pm).

Varsity (all U21): Midlands vs Zululand (7 pm); Durban vs Zululand (7.45 pm); Midlands vs Northern KZN (8.30 pm).
