Clubbing: Crowded House celebrates 15 years of thumping good times

2011-09-05 00:00

THERE was a carnival atmosphere at Pietermaritzburg’s Crowded House on Saturday night as about 1 000 people gathered to celebrate the nightclub’s 15th birthday.

Patrons won a host of prizes, including a trip for two to Rio de Janeiro, and the evening saw patrons dressing up for a “Rio Carnival” theme.

Masks, bright costumes, fire dancing and stilt-walkers made for a party that carried on into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The club opened its doors for the first time on August 28, 1996, and owner Carlos de Freitas says he never imagined it sustaining itself for as long as it has.

“When we first opened nightclubs in the area were experiencing lifespans of around a year,” he said. “So never once in my wildest dreams did I think that we would be as successful as we have been.”

After fierce competition from other clubs in the Pietermaritzburg area over the years, Crowded House finds itself almost unopposed in the city’s nightclub scene. Thousands of revellers come through its doors monthly.

“We thank everyone who has ever supported us,” De Freitas added. “It’s been a really fun time and we look forward to many more celebrations.”
