Coast for locals after PMB event cancelled

2011-01-14 00:00

WITH the enforced cancellation of the Alex Wasps Half-marathon this Sunday, due to problems in securing traffic department support, Pietermaritzburg and midland runners face the challenge of the long journey down to the coast for the Toyota Scottburgh Half-Marathon, where they will be warmly welcomed by a local community keen to capitalise on the income and benefit of visiting runners.

The race starts at the main beach area outside the Scottburgh Caravan Park, and goes up through the centre of the town before dropping down to the old South Coast Road for a lightly undulating and scenic out-and-back to Umkomaas.

Given the probable increase in numbers from the Alex Wasps event it is advisable to get to the venue early, not only for parking but also to ensure entry prior to the 6 am start. The organisers are promising the “coolest” refreshment tables in the province, which will be very welcome if the current weather holds for Sunday.

The race has the potential for fast times and the beachfront finish lends itself to a great after-race day for the whole family. There are the usual category awards for top contenders and Gordon Hutton has more details at 083 657 7976.

Track-and-field athletes will be in action on Saturday at King’s Park track for the first of the league events. With a programme that starts at 9.30 am and runs to 4.30 pm, it is an ideal opportunity for local athletes to start staking their claim for places in the KZN team for the SA Senior Track and Field Championships, which will be hosted in Durban on the weekend of April 9.

The age group athletes can also use the leagues to post times to qualify for the SA Masters Championships, which will follow on April 29 in Durban. Details of the league dates and programmes are available from the KZN Athletics Office at 031 312 9374.

All athletes and clubs are reminded that the 2010 licenses will remain valid for all competitions until January 31. However, clubs should contact the office to collect the new 2011 licenses and begin distributing these to their club members as soon as possible. More details at 031 312 9374.

Other races cancelled from the new 2011 fixture list include the Langasun Marathon on January 30, which was to be hosted by Imamba Club in Empangeni, and the Kosi Bay 21 km on February 13.

Runners should note that the Annual Battlefields run hosted by Newcastle Harriers is earlier this year and will only extend to a 42 km and will not include the traditional 50 km distance.
