Coastal Stream log leaders unchanged after First Division ‘catch-up weekend’

2010-12-01 00:00

THE “catch-up weekend” in the National First Division saw Jomo Cosmos reclaim top spot on the Inland Stream log, while the Coastal Stream remained unchanged at the top.

With University of Pretoria not fixtured, the weekend presented former PSL campaigners Cosmos with a chance to leapfrog the Steve Barker side and reclaim first place.

Cosmos’s 1-0 home win over Witbank Spurs at Makhulong Stadium on Saturday, courtesy of a Katlego Loke late strike, saw them enjoy a point lead (19 points from nine games) in the Inland Stream.

In the Coastal Stream, African Warriors moved up to fourth place following their comprehensive 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Free State-based Warriors’ win saw them move above both Nathi Lions (sixth place) and FC Cape Town (fifth).

The completion of these three “catch-up” matches that the PSL re-scheduled means all 16 First Division clubs have now each played nine games.

Meanwhile, the promotion race intensifies this weekend in both streams with exciting matches lined up. Coastal Stream leaders Bay United visit Nathi Lions in KwaMashu on Friday night hoping to stretch the one-point lead they enjoy over second-placed Thanda Royal Zulu, who have a date with Carara Kicks in Bethlehem on Sunday.

In the Inland Stream, Tuks get a chance to reclaim top spot when they host Dynamos in Pretoria on Friday night, while Cosmos face a tricky assignment against struggling United FC in Mpumalanga on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the PSL has released the Nedbank Cup preliminary round fixtures for six NFD teams.

Only one Coastal team got home advantage while the rest of the matches will be hosted by Inland teams.

The games will be played on December 11 and 18, but the fixtures are still to be confirmed by the PSL.
