Coastal triumph, Inland shamed

2013-03-16 00:00

THE two KZN cricket teams in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition matches had diametrically opposing outcomes yesterday. It was only day two of the three-day matches, but it was all over at both venues with a day to spare.

At Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, KZN Inland were overwhelmed by a rampant North West in losing by an innings and 76 runs, while at Chatsworth Oval, a buoyant KZN Coastal demolished Namibia by an innings and 114 runs.

However, the real sensation was at Senwes Park yesterday as North West, who declared their first innings on their overnight 289 for nine, then went on to skittle KZN Inland for the fourth-lowest total in the history of first-class cricket on South African soil.

Inland were bowled out for 26.

They joined the ranks of Border, who were routed for 16 and 18 by Natal in a Currie Cup match in East London in the 1959/60 season. The third-lowest total was also made by Border, who were dismissed by Natal for 23, again in East London, in the 1920/21 season.

In their follow-on, Inland made 187 in a match that lasted only 162 overs.

KZN Coastal built on their excellent start on day one in Chatsworth, where they had dismissed Namibia for 110 before reaching 203 for one at the close. Yesterday, Michael Alexander and Jonathan Vandiar joined Mishkal Ramsaroop in hitting hundreds before Coastal declared their first innings at 415 for three.

Namibia managed 191 in their second innings, but at 64 for six, it was just about over already.

The Pro20 matches that were due to start tomorrow, may well be moved forward to today.
