Coastals bowlers turn tables on Inland

2010-09-23 00:00

AFTER a two-day batting fiesta, the tables were turned at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday as KZN Inland were shot out for a paltry 104 in the 40-over friendly against KZN Coastals.

And to rub salt into the Inland wound, Coastals proceeded to knock off the runs inside 15 overs.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Inland were under constant pressure due to a combination of superb catching and relentless pressure at both ends, which was in stark contrast to the two-day friendly where the batters reigned supreme.

IPL star Yusuf Abdullah snared the prolific Devon Conway with the match’s second delivery thanks to a fine Khaya Zondo catch.

After Dolphins’ left-arm paceman dismissed Tim Drummond, Inland were bundled out with nine overs to spare.

In an excellent example of how batsmen can be strangled out if there is no weak link in a bowling attack, all five Coastals bowlers got in on the wicket-taking while no one went for more than five to the over.

In chasing down 101 for victory, Coastals were never under any pressure and the total fairly rattled along with Bradley Barnes and Divan van Wyk scoring at more than a run a ball.

On current form, Van Wyk will be knocking loudly on Dolphins coach Graham Ford’s door, while Barnes’s batting has come on in leaps and bounds in recent seasons.

Looking at the Inland attack yesterday, there is no doubt that genuine all-rounders Rudi Hillerman — and hopefully Ross McMillan — are needed to create wicket-taking opportunities.

Coach Doug Watson’s side need more venom up front if they are to be successful this season. Otherwise, it’s going to be another long hot summer for the fielders.
