Coastals end season with a whimper

2011-04-05 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Coastals cricket side didn’t have a memorable end to the Provincial Challenge season when they were thumped by six wickets with a massive 22 overs to spare in the 40-over match at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on Sunday.

Coastals won the toss and elected to bat, but were shot out for just 82 in 19.5 overs. Gareth Roderick top-scored with 23 followed by Bruce Kruger with 20.

Northerns quick bowlers CJ de Villiers (three for 12) and Mario Olivier (six for 34) destroyed any semblance of a chance Coastal had of building a match-winning target.

Coastals spinner Keshav Maharaj took two for 24, but Northerns made short work of hauling in the mediocre target.

The three-day match that finished on Saturday ended in a draw, with Coastal just one wicket away from what would have been a very good victory. The big-hitting Cameron Delport scored a remarkable 163 off just 129 balls that included 23 fours and five sixes.

Meanwhile, at the conclusion of the competitions this weekend, Western Province completed a memorable season by doing the three-day and 40-over double.

KZN Coastals ended in fifth place in the three-day series and in fourth spot in the 40-over series, while KZN Inland finished in third-last position in the three-day series and second-last in the 40-over series in this 14-team competition.
