Coastals outplay Inland in KZN derby

2009-10-12 00:00

THERE was very little to enthuse about for KZN Inland supporters during the Provincial Challenge 45-over match at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday, as a rampant KZN Coastals beat the home province by 64 runs.

Largely due to overnight rain, the match was reduced to 29 overs. The talented Coastals line-up comprehensively out-batted and out-bowled Inland, whose opening partnership failures haunted them once again. Former Inland opener Clint Bowyer must be handed his old job back, and it is now beyond urgent that player/coach Doug Watson, a seasoned first-ball man, quits the middle-order and faces the shiny red cherry with him.

One reason for Inland fans to smile was Tim Drummond’s wicketkeeping. If not by knockout, the Inland skipper beat Dolphins number two Bradley Barnes on points.

With a day’s play in total lost to the weather, the three-dayer ended unsatisfactorily for Coastals on Saturday when bad light stopped master blaster Loots Bosman from winning the match. As he said: “I just needed 10 more minutes”.
