Cogta takes over Ugu

2013-05-17 00:00

THE Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Department has intervened in the finances of another KwaZulu-Natal municipality.

This comes almost a week after the department took over the finances of Umzinyathi District Municipality.

Yesterday, Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube visited the Ugu District Municipality, where she announced the deployment of finance experts who will work with the municipality’s bosses to trim wasteful expenditure and address audit issues.

“It is vitally important that we address the situation as a matter of urgency because Ugu as a district municipality … is responsible for the provision of a very delicate basic service, which is water and sanitation.

“The situation, if left unattended, may result in the failure by the municipality to provide this essential service,” Dube said in a statement.

“The intervention being made in the Ugu District Municipality, among others, is intended to provide support so as to avert a total collapse of the financial administration, which could lead to a collapse in the entire administration and, effectively, service delivery.”

She also said the interventions in the municipalities showed that not only the provincial government, but also the municipal leadership were being serious about the need for support.
