Colleagues bid farewell with gospel songs at memorial service

THE memorial service of slain gospel singer Sifiso Mzulwini at the City Hall in Durban yesterday afternoon turned into a impromptu gospel concert as his colleagues bid farewell in song.

Mzulwini, who was killed by police on Wednesday last week after reportedly being sought by the authorities for alleged involvement in house robberies, was yesterday remembered by the large crowd as someone who loved gospel music.

Many gospel lovers, who remember Mzulwini as the founding member of uMlazi group Ithemba, also questioned the police’s allegation that Mzulwini had opened fire on them. The Independent Complaints Directorate is now investigating the police shooting.

Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, who represented the ANC, urged mourners and supporters to continue to do good as Mzulwini would have expected of them. “I know that there are complaints regarding Sifiso’s death, but there is in an investigation and we must allow the process of that investigation to be concluded,” he said. Mzulwini will be buried today after a service at the eThekwini Community Church in Albert Park.
