College, Hilton in final

2012-02-14 00:00

MARITZBURG College and Hilton played the last of their round robin matches in the Sunfoil Night League last night. It was essentially a dead rubber as these two schools should meet one other in the final tomorrow.

Even if College lose they will be in the final and so the motivation to win was missing. Hilton needed to win to ensure that they play in the final. This they did, but without a bonus point.

College, after winning the toss, started extremely cautiously, allowing the Hilton opening bowling pair of Tom Curran and Ross McLaren to get on top immediately.

Eventually Shawn Sinclair (36) and Karl Hillermmann (30) added 73 for the first wicket, but off 127 balls.

College eventually reached 167 for five. Tyron Walsh batted positively, making 32 off 41 balls. Gareth Orr was 28 not out. Matt Lauryssen and Brian Pfaff were the best of the bowlers with two wickets each.

Hilton started much more positively and after 10 overs were 49 for one in comparison to the 29 for 0 by College.

After 20 overs Hilton had reached 92 for one. Hilton lost their second wicket in the 25th over with the score on 114.

Brian Pfaff batted well, scoring 48 off 38 balls. Bantu Futshane and Pfaff added 71 for the third wicket. Futshane ended on 51 off 77 balls.

They were slowed down and in the bowling power play and then struggled to reach the earlier rate. They reached the College total in the 35th over.

Score in brief:

Maritzburg College 167-5 (Sinclair 36, Hillermann 30, Walsh 32 Orr 28*)

Hilton 171-3 (Pfaff 48, Futshane 51*)

Hilton won by seven wickets

This evening the final round robin match between St Charles and Michaelhouse takes place, but this is again a dead rubber as neither side can reach the final.
