College and Epworth shine on the Mooi

2011-02-15 00:00

MARITZBURG College’s Donovan Wewege and Epworth’s Brittany Petersen took the honours on the Mooi River on Saturday in the final event for the first half of the 2011 Capitol Caterers-Popes Canoe Centre Interschools’ Challenge.

Starting from just above White Rapid outside Mooi River the two led their classes all the way to the finish 18 kilometres downstream at the Double Causeway. Michaelhouse paddlers Andrew Houston and Matthew Heenan took second and third place in the U18 category two-and-a- half minutes behind Wewege.

Another Michaelhouse paddler, Bruce Arnott, won the U16 race from College’s Louis Hattingh.

Kate Arnott from St Anne’s managed to hold off a concerted challenge from the leading U16 girl, Bianca Haw from Epworth, to take second place in the girls’ race, but was six minutes behind Petersen.

A good field of 125 paddlers entered the race, hosted by Weston Agricultural College and Hilton College, in hot sunny weather on a low Mooi River flowing at nine cumecs. The next event in the interschools’ challenge will be the Canoe Polo Tournament in September.
