College claim honours at canoe polo tourney

2012-09-11 00:00

SATURDAY saw the KZN boys’ schools descending on PMB for the annual interschools canoe polo tournament. The game is a combination of kayaking and water polo, and saw four schools fighting it out for honours at the Pieter Booysen swimming pool.

The junior section final (U15 age group) was a battle between Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse, and a score of 4-1 saw the Balgowan boys proving triumphant. The senior section comprising U18 boys saw seven sides competing in a log-based system to earn enough points to secure a position in the final.

Again Michaelhouse and Martizburg College dominated proceedings and won all their pool games. The schools’ dominance was highlighted by the fact that the third and fourth play-off qualifiers were the Michaelhouse and College second sides. The final saw Michaelhouse enjoying the lead initially. This was short-lived as College powered ahead to a 3-1 lead at half-time. Goals came thick and fast, but the College side emerged worthy winners with a final score of 5-4 with Cam Christie named as man of the match.
