College deserve the win

2011-04-19 00:00

THERE were only the two matches among the top hockey schools and it was Maritzburg College that continued to impress.

No report was received from the match between Westville and Northwood.

Maritzburg College vs Pretoria BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

College was on the board in the 13th minute when Grant Glutz scored with a powerful flick from the first penalty corner of the game. Thereafter both sides had further chances. The persistent rain spoilt what might have been a spectacle as players struggled on the very wet astro. The 1-0 lead at the break was justified as College had had a territorial advantage, but the visitors would have been disappointed that they had not scored.

The second half was a different story as College dominated possession and territory. After just four minutes Glutz scored from the third penalty corner awarded. Just a few minutes later he was on hand when he eliminated a few Boys’ High defenders to slip the ball to Jordan Turnbull who finished slickly. College dominated the next 20 minutes, squandering a number of penalty corners and it was in the dying seconds that Tim Guise-Brown scored from the penalty spot. This after a PBHS defender had been struck on the shoulder, from a Glutz pile-driver, on the line from the eighth penalty corner awarded to College

College fully deserved the 4-0 win and if the conditions had been better it could have been much greater.

Glenwood 3 DHS 0; Northwood 3 Westville 1; Howick 8 Scottburgh 1.
