College favourites in Hilton clash

2011-04-30 00:00

MOST state schools have taken an extended break and will only reopen next week, so there are only two school hockey matches today.

St Charles, who are back at school, and Clifton have both gone to hockey festivals — St Charles to the Independent Schools Festival being hosted by St Davids in Inanda and Clifton to a Co-ed Festival at Kingswood in Grahamstown.

The fixture on Beckingham at Hilton sees the second match between Hilton and Maritzburg College this season. The first game just a few weeks ago went College’s way, but not before Hilton had caused a minor surprise by scoring two goals against College. College won 3-2.

Hilton will be buoyed by this result and they will want to do as well if not better, but they are facing a side that are unbeaten after 11 games. Hilton have played 13 games with just two victories. This does make the visitors overwhelming favourites.

The other match is at Westville where they will be hosting Kearsney. Kearsney have had a successful tour to Malaysia while Westville have been at the King Edwards Easter Festival. They did not, however, do very well as they drew one game and lost others. Perhaps more disturbing, however, is that they did not score a goal.

Prior to the tour, Kearsney won three games and certainly appear the best of the Coastal schools. Since their return Kearsney have had a game against a Madsen XI and they should be fully prepared for today’s clash.
