College focus on toppling Glenwood in a much-anticipated finale this Saturday

THE stage is set for a fantastic finale to the schoolboy hockey season in KwaZulu-Natal when Maritzburg College host Glenwood on Pape’s Astro this coming Saturday.

It is the last match for Glenwood, narrow victors over College in the first-round match at Three Schools’ Turf in Durban, while it is the last home match for College. Emotions are sure to run high for these reasons, as many of the school-leaving boys have spent two, and even three, years in the first team and will be desperate to crown this phase of their hockey careers with a win.

Maritzburg College’s season ends on Saturday at Grey College in Bloemfontein, but for now all focus will be on toppling Glenwood. Both sides have a fierce rivalry that brings high drama to their contests and Pape’s Astro is sure to be packed with supporters of both teams on Saturday morning.

Away to Pretoria Boys’ High School this past Saturday, Maritzburg College were left to rue their sloppy finishing in the strike zone in what was an eagerly anticipated return-leg fixture.

Producing some scintillating attacking hockey, College had won the first leg 9-1 on Pape’s earlier in the season but had to settle for a 2-2 draw this time round.

Meanwhile, Glenwood were 1-0 winners over feisty underdogs Affies in Pretoria.

After their success against Grey College the previous week, the boys in green were determined to follow up with another win and started the stronger of the teams, passing accurately and finding space in midfield.
