College get the upper hand after bad start

2013-01-31 00:00

AFTER a week of hot weather, the first match of Sunfoil day/night school’s series on Tuesday, in the second week, was interrupted by drizzle that started just before the supper interval.

Play was suspended for about 90 minutes and when it resumed the Duckworth-Lewis formula was applied for Maritzburg College and the Presidents XI.

Presidents had won the toss and elected to bowl, but too many loose balls and extras helped College to a total of 230 for seven after the allotted 40 overs. College started badly, losing two wickets in the first six overs, but a 50- run partnership for the third wicket between Sohail Mahmoud (26) and Kurtlynn Mannikum and another of 59 between Mannikum (34) and Piero Zanone enabled College to reach 126/4 after 24 overs. Zanone went on to a well-played half-century.

Five extra overs of wides were bowled and if the bowling had been tighter, College would probably have posted a lot fewer runs.

Two bowlers, Vaughn Manuel and Pavi Indrajith, captured a brace of wickets each, but Josh Foster had the most economical figures of 26 runs from his eight overs, capturing one wicket.

When play resumed, the target had been reduced to 167 off a possible 23 overs. Wickets tumbled and the Presidents XI were all out in the 22nd over for 74.

Gareth Jeary took two early wickets and another two to finish them off, ending with 4/10 from 4.1 overs. David Small bowled five overs, taking 3/22, and Mahmoud captured 2/14 in his five overs.
