College in for Dolphins at Pro20

2011-02-18 00:00

MARITZBURG College arrived in Stellenbosch yesterday afternoon to represent the Dolphins franchise in the finals of the Standard Bank School’s Pro20 competition.

This competition is in its second year after the 2010 final was won by Menlo Park representing the Titans.

This competition between more than 600 schools country-wide started in the fourth term last year with the preliminary knockout rounds. In KZN regional matches were played, ending with the quarter-finals in the last few weeks in both KZN Inland and Coastal.

The KZN final was held last week at Kingsmead where Maritzburg College beat Kearsney and won the right to represent the Dolphins in Stellenbosch.

The six franchise winners have been divided into two pools, with College in a pool with the Lions winners King Edward VII school from Johannesburg and Titans winners, Waterkloof. The latter will be at their first final and are replacing last year’s winners, Menlo Park. KES were present last year.

The other pool has Cobras winners Wynberg, Warriors winners Grey HS from Port Elizabeth for the first time and Noordkaap representing the Knights.

The first of the matches takes place this afternoon at Newlands as a curtain-raiser to the Cobras/Warriors clash. The schools representing these two franchises kick off the round robin stages, Wynberg and Grey HS.

All the matches thereafter will be played at the University of Stellenbosch fields. Tomorrow morning, Noordkaap play KES and Waterkloof play College. In the afternoon Wynberg play College, Grey HS play Noordkaap and Waterkloof play KES.

On Sunday morning College will face KES, Grey High against Waterkloof and Noordkaap meet Wynberg.

The playoffs take place on Sunday afternoon and the winners of each pool are playing for the winning cash prize of R10 000.

None of the Dolphin’s matches will be televised.
