College on a par with Glenwood

2011-06-11 00:00

FOR some schools today sees their last rugby game of 2011, but for most it is the penultimate match of the year. Only Glenwood and Maritzburg College have fixtures next term.

Today’s big game is at College on their Old Boy’s Reunion weekend against Glenwood. Last year College also played Glenwood in front of their Old Boys and — after losing their first match against Glenwood in Durban — turned the tables to win by 19 points.

This will be the first meeting of the two schools this year and it looks set to be a very even contest. Glenwood lost against all expectations against Northwood three weeks back, but they beat Kearsney who had earlier beaten College. The only other school they have both played is DHS and College met them in the first match of the season, winning very easily. Glenwood met them in their last game winning 19-5.

After a bye last week Glenwood will be fresh but College will be buoyed by the presence of the hundreds of Old Boy’s that will be present. This will not be a game for the feint-hearted as the clashes will be fierce.

DHS have a tough encounter on their Founder’s Day against Hilton. The ltter played particularly well against St Albans, last time out. DHS have improved over the season and with the game taking place under lights, do have the advantage.

Kearsney is at home against Michaelhouse and this should be another keen contest. On paper Kearsney should win but the Michaelhouse side has shown in a number of encounters that they must not be taken lightly. If the latter can hold their own in the tight phases then the game will be close.

St Charles has been tenacious in most of their games against opposition that have largely outsized them. They will need to do the same today against Northwood who have some big forwards and this is another side that has improved over the season.

Selected fixtures (home side first): Maritzburg College v Glenwood; DHS v Hilton; Kearsney v Michaelhouse; St Charles v Northwood; Port Natal v Westville (at Voortrekker); Voortrekker v Westville II; Howick v Greytown; Pinetown v Clifton; Thomas More v Treverton; Weston v Wartburg
