College plan for 2015

MARITZBURG College made the long trek up to the “Springbok Factory” that is Grey Bloem for their final rugby match of the season over the weekend.

Unfortunately, the boys in red, black and white came up short against a very clinical Grey side who ran out 46-20 winners.

College coach Ryan Strudwick lamented the number of errors his side made, which gave Grey plenty to feed off.

“Obviously we aren’t happy with the overall result. Grey capitalised on our mistakes, we just made far too many errors,” he said.

College were definitely competitive and a strong first half showing left the score line at just 18-3 to Grey. However the home side ran away a bit in the second half, scoring four tries in the second stanza to claim a comfortable victory.

“I think the scoreline was a bit flattering to Grey. We failed to capitalise on a number of opportunities and left a lot of chances. But that is what a quality side will do to you,” said Strudwick.

However, the College coach praised Grey for their outstanding play.

“We have to give them credit. They put us under pressure. We were playing away and you tend to make more errors than you do at home. We just weren’t clinical,” he said.

Despite the loss, Strudwick was happy with College’s season, where they only lost four games out of 22.

“We are really happy. Losing the last game is a bit of a dampener, but otherwise it was a good season. A lot of the guys put their hands up and we had some great team performances,” the coach said.

Not wanting to single out individuals, Strudwick did say that he was most impressed with his captain Daryn Goodson, who was “outstanding and led well from the front”. He also made mention of his centre Marcel Coetzee, who has been awarded with a junior contract at the Sharks.

Although the rugby season is officially over, Strudwick is already making plans for next season. “We never stop thinking about rugby. We are giving the guys about a month off while they play other sports then we will draw up a squad and start training towards the end of October,” he said.

Strudwick is hoping to emulate this season and continue from where they left off.

He expects that a number of players from this year’s second side will make the bulk of next year’s first team.

“This year’s team got College back on track, but next year the guys will have to band together and play for each other,” he said.

College’s first XV were rated 15th on the Powerade Performance Rankings.
