College revenge

2012-08-01 00:00

THE only two matches of the weekend, both in Pretoria, saw Maritzburg College pick up an excellent win while surprisingly, Glenwood were beaten.

Pretoria Boys’ High 2, Maritzburg College 3

Early in the season, College lost their home game against Boys’ High, which made them particularly determined to win the return game. It was evident as College won two penalty corners in the first eight minutes and from both of them Tim Guise-Brown made certain to put the visitors 2-0 in front.

In a gutsy comeback, the Pretoria lads pressed hard and goalkeeper Lihle Mafilika was given little chance from close range. This enabled the home side to draw level before half-time.

Despite College gaining six penalty corners to one by PBHS, College could not score after the break. It was only five minutes from the end that MJ Murray burst through from the midfield with the ball deflecting off a PBHS stick and rolling over the line. This was enough to give College a deserved 3-2 win.

Affies 2 Glenwood 0

Glenwood went up to Affies confident of a win, but despite domination in the game they went down by two goals. Perhaps there was over-confidence in their ranks, but they were also unhappy with several umpiring decisions. They certainly had opportunities to score with a penalty corner count of 9-2 in their favour.

Affies’ first goal in the first half came after a goal-mouth scramble ended with the ball going under ’keeper Michael Labuschagne’s stick.

Glenwood continued their domination in the second half, entering the circle on numerous occasions and missing the net three times with just the ’keeper to beat. With 15 minutes remaining, Affies was awarded a stroke and this was buried, giving them an unlikely 2-0 win.

It was a disappointing end to a match that Glenwood should have won, as Affies have not had a good year and this was only their second win of the season.

Maritzburg College 8 Warwick School 0

Warwick, a touring school from England, were put to the sword as College scored five goals in the first quarter of the game. Guise-Brown netted from two early penalty corners and completed his hat-trick in the second half, while Murray scored a brace.
