College to face SA’s next best

2009-08-08 00:00

THIS will be the last weekend with some interschool rugby on the fixture list, but it will be in Durban on Dixons at Glenwood. Maritzburg College will be facing the top KZN side and arguably the second best side in the country behind Grey College.

Last weekend both Glenwood and College were in Pretoria, playing local rivals Affies and Pretoria BHS respectively. Earlier in the season Affies had beaten PBHS 22-15.

In atrocious conditions on Saturday — cold, wet and windy — Glenwood were able to outscore Affies by three tries to one and win the game 24-10.

College did not handle the conditions as well and they went down by six tries to two. This gave Boys’ High a 41-15 win, the biggest winning margin ever against College. It was somewhat flattering for the hosts who were gifted some soft tries, but they certainly deserved their win.

All the cards are stacked in Glenwood’s favour. They beat College 23-11 on Goldstones and had nine players in the Craven Week side, including an SA Schools player, to the two that College had.

As Affies have been ranked just behind Grey College, Glenwood can assume that they are now the second-ranked side in the country. All this, and their obvious confidence from their unbeaten KZN season, will make them a very difficult side to beat. Only over-confidence on their part can give College a chance to keep the margin of defeat reasonably close.
