College to host some top school clashes

SCHOOL sport lovers will be pleased to learn that the 2013 season in the capital will be filled with some top school clashes.

The matches will take place at Maritzburg College as part of the year-long celebrations of the 150th anniversary of KZN’s oldest boy’s high school.

The Easter holidays have become the festival season, as rugby and hockey festivals are played in all parts of the country. The Grey HS Festival held annually in Port Elizabeth and one to which five KZN top schools played this year, will not take place in 2013, but will be replaced by the Skonk Nicholson Festival, which will be held at College.

The Skonk Nicholson Festival, which started in 2008, in honour of the then living doyen of rugby at College, has included teams in the junior age groups. Next year, it will be a first team festival with nine top rugby schools joining College from Saturday, March 30 to Wednesday, April 3, with five matches on each of the three days.

The schools that have accepted invitations to this festival are DHS from KZN, Affies, Jeppe and Monument from Gauteng, Dale and Queens from Border, Grey HS from Port Elizabeth, Noordkaap from Kimberley and Rondebosch from Cape Town. There promises to be some mouth-watering contests over the three playing days.

The Easter weekend also sees the Nomads Hockey Festival being hosted by College. This festival runs from Saturday, March 30 to Monday, April 1, with games on the Pape’s astro just above the rugby field.

A good seat will allow one to watch both the rugby and hockey on Saturday and again on the Monday. Millfield from England will be one of the main attractions at the hockey.

The Wildeklawe Festival, which this year was hosted by Diamantveld in Kimberley and in its first year in 2011 by Affies, will be hosted by College in recognition of the 150th anniversary. These games will be played on Saturday, May 2 and Monday, May 4. There will be 18 teams at this festival, which is seen as the country’s flagship school rugby event, with most of the top 20 schools participating.

Strangely, the 18th side this year is an Invitation XV which will include players from KZN.

The other 17 schools are Maritzburg College and Glenwood from KZN, Affies, Waterkloof and Monument from Gauteng, Grey College from Bloemfontein, Boland Landbou, Drostdy, Paarl BHS, Paarl Gym and Paul Roos from the Western Cape, Oakdale and Outeniqua from South Western Districts, Grey HS and Framesby from Port Elizabeth, and Noordkaap and Diamantveld from Kimberley.

On the weekend of September 14-15, College will host a soccer festival to include many of the top KZN schools, as well as others from outside the province.

To cap the sporting events will be the annual Michaelmas Cricket Week, which will be in its 54th year and as normal, will include many of the top cricketing schools in the country.

Swimming will be catered for with an invitation gala at Seals on March 20 and a special College race in conjunction with the Midmar Mile.

Canoeing will include a College batch in the Dusi Canoe Marathon.

This is certainly a memorable sporting year for one of the 10 oldest schools in the country.
