College to mark 150 yrs with winter fest

2013-03-19 00:00

MARITZBURG College is celebrating its 150th birthday, and one exciting aspect of the celebration is the 150th Winter Sports Festival.

The festival, over the Easter holidays, incorporates three stand-alone tournaments, including the Maritzburg College 150th Rugby Festival, from March 30 to April 3, where 10 first XVs from leading rugby-playing schools will take part.

The other two events are the Nomads Hockey Festival, from March 30 to April 1, which is a long-established annual festival for 12 of South Africa’s top-tier schoolboy first teams, and the annual Husqvarna Skonk Nicholson Rugby Festival, from April 5 to April 6, which features eight teams in the U14 age group, and eight teams in the U16 age group,

Not only will Maritzburg College be hosting two premier Easter rugby festivals, but a month later — from May 1 to May 4 — they will also be staging the invitation-only Wildeklawer Rugby Festival

This festival will allow supporters to enjoy even more of the best in South African schoolboy rugby, featuring the likes of Grey College, Paul Roos Gymnasium and the Paarl powerhouses of Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gymnasium.

More immediately, the Maritzburg College 150th Rugby Festival has SA schoolboy rugby giants Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies) topping the bill.

They are joined by Hoërskool Monument from Krugersdorp, Grey High School, Queens College, Dale College, Rondebosch Boys’ High, Hoërskool Noord-Kaap, Jeppe High, Maritzburg College and Durban High School.

The hosts will have their pedigree sorely tested when they face Grey High on March 30, Noord-Kaap on April 1 and Queens College on April 3 in the final match.

Among the other attractions are a big refreshment garden and play facilities for children.

Entrance is R10 per person and secure parking will be provided on the school’s lower fields.

The Nomads Hockey Festival is the oldest, most prestigious event of its kind in South Africa.

Millfield — arguably the top sports school in the UK — will be special guests and their match against the host school, with whom they have a fierce rivalry, is sure to be a highlight.
