College vs Kearsney the pick

2010-01-23 00:00

THE weather forecast seems more favourable today than last weekend and as many more schools are playing, and with the independent schools back in session, it is hoped a full days’ play will be possible.

Generating a lot of interest will be Maritzburg College against Kearsney on Goldstones. At the end of last year Kearsney beat College and this will be an incentive for College to get one back. Kearsney have lost a number of senior players, but the in-form Chad Bowes, a Dolphins Under-18 player, is in matric this year. He scored 150 against the Australian side Churchies from Brisbane at the Hilton Festival.

Also returning are Richard Pentecost, Josh Perry and all-rounder and captain Jason Lacon-Allin. Kearsney won all three of their matches at the Hilton Festival, including a comprehensive 140-run win against Paarl BHS. College have a strong top batting line-up to face.

College have won all five of their games this year, including a 10-wicket win against St Charles in a 20/20 match on Tuesday evening. Captain Jarryd Walsh and grade 11 pupil Kewan Harries have been the main run-scorers, both with a century behind their names already. College have three players who played for the Dolphins Cubs team, Tyler Lortan, Nic Hendrie and Calvin Savage. The latter also made the SA Schools team in December.

This sets up a classic match today and there is likely to be a comparatively good crowd of supporters for both teams.

Another keenly contested game will be at Glenwood, who host neighbours from across the Berea, DHS. It was DHS who won the last match of the year against Glenwood in 2009 and they will be keen to repeat the win today.

Glenwood, however, will be buoyed by their win against Michaelhouse at the Oval on Thursday evening and a reasonable showing at the College Festival where they won one match, lost one and had no result in the other due to afternoon rain.

St Charles travel to play Michaelhouse and both teams will be hoping for an improved batting display from games played this week. St Charles beat Grey College at the Grey Festival last week and have a potentially strong side.

Hilton will travel to Durban to play Northwood and as Hilton have not yet won a game in the three they have played, they will be hoping to do so today.
