College’s Grant Glutz impresses yet again

2011-07-26 00:00

MARITZBURG College, with their four SA Schools’ hockey players, played their last home game against Affies on Saturday.

Grant Glutz converted the first penalty corner of the game as early as the fifth minute, before following this up with a second conversion five minutes later, to put College 2-0 in front after 10 minutes. In the 19th minute, Nic Berichon turned the ball over to Glutz, who was involved in the third goal, beating two defenders before setting up Nic Wanliss, who finished clinically. Five minutes later, Nic Bechet at right defender received a ball out wide, and fed Glutz an early long-overhead ball, which Glutz carried across the top of the circle, before letting go with a powerful and low backhand shot that went past the Affies keeper like a rocket.

After half-time, Affies came out and played with a lot of passion, and held the College XI to a clean sheet for 26 minutes before Wanliss fed Glutz, who had led into a wide position. An accurate pass from Glutz then found Jordan Turnbull in the six-metre area, and he finished cleanly to put College 5-0 in front. With their eighth penalty corner of the game two minutes later, the ever-reliable combination of Berichon inserting, Bechet stopping, and Glutz flicking, saw College go 6-0 in front with another powerful drag flick. College were not finished yet, and in the last minute of the game Glutz stepped up to convert yet another penalty corner, to take his tally to five in the game.

Glutz has now scored 46 goals this season, and with two more games remaining, could reach the 50-goal mark.
