Collegians and Elephants meet in local derby

2011-03-25 00:00

THERE is nothing quite like a local derby to get the competitive fires burning and it should be no different when high-riding Maritzburg Colle- gians meet the battling Pietermaritzburg Elephants at Woodburn Stadium tomorrow.

This KwaZulu-Natal first-division muscle-up kicks off at 3.30 pm and there is little doubt that the Elephants have a mountain to climb if they hope to come away from the encounter with credit.

After two rounds the Elephants wallow near the bottom of the log, but there were signs against the traditional top-four side, South Coast Warriors, last time out that they are sorting themselves out. A 20-16 defeat could so easily have gone the Elephants’ way and there is no doubt they will throw everything but the kitchen sink at Collegians in what should be a fiery first half at least.

Pietermaritzburg Collegians have already scored a hatful of tries in their two matches to date against newcomers Richards Bay and the ambitious Ballito Dolphins.

Their star hooker and captain Charl Bezuidenhout (Achilles tendon), outstanding loosehead Blake Kyd (facial stitches) and in-form flanker Justin Smith (bruised hip) are out, but Collegian’s impressive depth should be enough to ensure dominance in the tight phases.

Former Pietermaritzburg Ele- phants captain Brendon Fourie (33) moved over to Collegians this season and his form behind a powerful pack has been electrifying, which indicates that the Elephants’ loose trio are in for a trying afternoon.

Apart from the fiery rugby that is set to be dished up in the 2 pm second-team game and the 3.30 pm first-team clash, the PMB Collegians versus PMB Elephants encounters at Woodburn tomorrow also give the rugby public the chance to help raise funds in an effort to help with the exorbitant costs of running Woodburn.

Long-time local club rugby sponsor Husqvarna has donated a brush cutter, which will be a lucky-draw prize.

Ground entry tickets cost R10 per person, with tickets going into the lucky draw.

Tonight sees the struggling Pietermaritzburg U20 sides in action and the A team’s trip to Crusaders in Durban North gives them a chance to break their duck.
