Collegians in battle of the basement

2013-05-24 00:00

AFTER recent defeats, Maritzburg Collegians and UKZN Impi are desperate to turn things around in Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division matches tonight.

Collegians have the arduous trek to Empangeni to handle before they take the field against Zululand Rhinos — not the ideal build-up to a key match after a hard day’s work. But Didier Claite is positive that the red, black and white will return to the KZN capital as the victors.

“It’s been the best week of training this season,” the Collegians chairperson told The Witness yesterday. “… the boys know that this is a must-win game.”

Indeed, it’s a battle of the basement — Collegians are just three points ahead of the last-placed Rhinos — and defeat would be a massive blow for either side, who would have targeted this clash as a must-win as soon as the fixtures were published. Adding further spice is that neither side has won in six outings.

The Impi, meanwhile, face their fourth consecutive tough game when they tackle Varsity College at 8 pm at Riverside Sports Club in Durban North and will be determined to turn their recent ill-fortune around.

That said, tonight’s most attractive match is undoubtedly that between log-leaders College Rovers and second-placed Durban Collegians on King’s Park 10.
