Colliding trucks at Ashburton turn N3 into a ‘parking lot’

2012-02-15 00:00

IT took a Pietermaritzburg motorist half an hour to drive the eight kilometres from Liberty Midlands Mall to Hayfields Mall after a truck accident caused bumper-to-bumper morning traffic.

A truck overturned on the N3 southbound near Ashburton, blocking most of the road. Another truck, trying to overtake it, also crashed, causing havoc during peak time.

“The freeway looked like a parking lot,” said a motorist driving past.

“It took me 30 minutes to drive from Midlands Mall to Hayfields Mall,” another remarked.

Near Hilton, traffic police ordered light vehicles to use Cedara Road offramp and heavy vehicles to stay on one lane of the freeway, although at least one truck sneaked through Hilton, defying a sign that bans trucks from that road.

Transport Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the department plans to meet truck companies and determine what role each party could play in applying and ensuring road safety.

In another accident two people were seriously injured and several chickens killed after two trucks collided near Tweedie.
