Collision: Bakkie with 13 pupils rolls in fog

2011-08-30 00:00

THIRTEEN schoolchildren were treated for minor injuries at Edendale Hospital yesterday after the bakkie they were travelling in collided with a taxi, veered off the road and landed in a ditch on Morcom Road.

The children, aged between 10 and 12 from various schools, were on their way to school when the accident happened.

The driver of the bakkie, Nkosinathi Meyiwa, said heavy fog limited his visibility while he was making his daily school round from Mpumuza at 7.40 am.

“I could not see the road properly and the driver of the Quantum taxi did not have his lights on. The taxi hit us on the side and we rolled into the ditch. Luckily no one got seriously hurt, but the children and I were a bit bruised and shaken up,” he said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the pupils were referred to hospital by ambulance for a medical checkup after paramedics attended to them on the scene.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the cause of the accident is being investigated.

“It is not clear how the accident happened, but a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened,” said Jeevan.— Witness Reporter.
