Community called to help fight crime

2014-11-24 00:00

A COMMUNITY-BASED anti-crime programme was announced by KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu recently.

“Criminals are our children, our son-in-laws, our boyfriends and our husbands,” Mchunu said. “It is difficult for police to fight crime without a strong community intelligence network that will inform and share information on the criminals with the police.”

Mchunu has called on KwaZulu-Natal councillors to assist in making sure the project runs smoothly.

In a statement released yesterday, Mchunu said the community safety plan was dubbed the M-Plan, after Nelson Mandela’s programme that mobilised ANC volunteers on the street to communicate with the community on their grievances and needs daily.

The department’s community safety plan is part of the programme of Building a United Front Against Crime. This envisages the rolling out of safety committees at provincial, district, ward, street and voting district levels.

Mchunu said although the project was aimed at the community, councillors would run the programme to ensure its efficiency.
