Community radio: PMB soon to hear ‘the sound of choice’

2010-10-08 00:00

AFTER much anticipation, Pietermaritzburg residents can finally expect to tune to Umgungundlovu Community Radio Station (UCRFM) from this evening to the end of next week as the contractors finalise frequency connections at World’s View.

The station, which is housed at Tembaletu Community Education Centre in Burger Street, was granted a broadcasting licence by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) in 2008.

Radio station general manager Muzi Sibiya said: “It is all systems go and all that we are waiting for is [completion of] a few touch-ups.

“As from this evening, people can start checking out U107.6FM, and if not, next week latest.”

With the pay-off line, “It is the sound of choice of KZN’s capital”, the station will allow community participation for listener groups, and programmes will be based on what listeners like.

“We believe that it will be an instrument for socio-economic and cultural development. We are also urging government departments to use the station as a means of providing information, especially for the marginalised people in underprivileged areas who do not have access to information,” said Sibiya.

Nthabeleng Mokitimi, a spokesperson for Sentech, which allocates frequencies, said they have been working on the station’s transmission systems and are nearing completion.
