Community rallies round to help those who lost homes

2014-09-25 00:00

THE Mountain Rise community is still rallying around to help the residents of the Woodstock Road informal settlement whose houses burnt down last week.

A collection in the Mountain Rise Mosque on Friday and among residents raised enough money for the purchase of two-plate gel stoves. These were distributed yesterday morning to affected residents. Executive Committee member Manilal Inderjit, who lives in the Mountain Rise area, said the stoves were being provided because they were safe and they wanted the community to stop using primus stoves.

Ward committee member Mehmood Oumar, who had been working on fundraising and assisting the community, said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of help. He said they were able to provide portable toilets and showers as well. Oumar thanked organisations Al-Imdaad, Food for Life, the Mountain Rise Women’s Group, the mosque and the broader community for donating clothes, food, toiletries and other items.
