Competitive tennis at independent schools’ festival

2012-10-09 00:00

THE annual independent schools’ tennis festival, hosted annually by Hilton College and St Anne’s, was another success, with some very competitive tennis.

The invitation tournament has proved popular and 11 schools from around the country, joined those from the hosts to play doubles matches over three days at the beginning of the September holidays. The weather was good, which helped players to produce their best.

This tournament is unique in school tennis in the country as eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams play doubles among the same sex teams and then a girls’ team and a boys’ team combine to play mixed doubles. Two co-ed schools, Uplands from Nelspruit and Somerset from Somerset West, brought both girls’ and boys’ teams.

St Mary’s from Waverley in Johannesburg won the girls’ doubles ahead of St Mary’s A from Kloof. The latter supplied two teams. In the boys’ doubles it was Clifton from Durban that won with St Stithians from Johannesburg as the runner’s-up. With St Mary’s Waverley combining with St Stithians and Clifton with St Mary’s Kloof, it was very likely that they would be the two top teams. The Johannesburg pairing shaded the KZN pairing to become the top mixed doubles team.
