Comrades ’09 ‘the best race ever’

2009-05-26 00:00

THIS year’s Comrades may have been a race against time for its organisers, but they told The Witness yesterday that all went smoothly — in fact, it may have been “the best race ever”.

“It was a good race,” said Craig Fry, Comrades Marathon Media and Communication Officer. “A lot of the companies and volunteers that have worked with us before said that this was the best race ever.”

Fry said the fact that they organised the finish structure, which usually takes three weeks to erect, in three days, says a lot about the rest of the race.

He also said they’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the runners. “They all said that there were plenty of refreshments, and the vibe that the supporters created was phenomenal.”

Fry said that even Russian runner, Leonid Shvetsov (who came second this year) told him that it was the support that kept him going. “He said he was sore and tired in the last 10 km of the race, but you lose all of that when they’re cheering for you.”

According to Fry, no crime was reported to them this year.

He said that there are things about the race that they’d liked to improve next year.

“We just need to control the crowd a bit better,” he said. “We like the runners to interact with the crowd, but when someone’s just run 90 km, the last thing they need is to have someone hanging on them.”

Fry added that preparation for next year’s Comrades has already begun.
