Comrades: Mamabolo to know fate on doping charge in January

2012-12-15 00:00

LUDWICK Mamabolo, the winner of this year’s Comrades Marathon, will know by mid-January if a charge that he used a banned stimulant in the race will be dropped.

The independent tribunal that brought the charge reserved judgment in an application by Mamabolo’s legal team for the case to be dropped.

Advocate Gilbert Marcus SC, for Mamabolo, submitted that there were too many mistakes in the test of the Comrades champion after the race on June 3 in Durban.

Mamabolo (35) tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine, which is found in some training supplements. He denied guilt.

Marcus listed 14 irregularities in the testing process.

“Mr Mamabolo is the victim of a botched process, which … was rotten from the start to finish,” Marcus argued.

Advocate Jannie Lubbe SC, for the tribunal, said 10 of the 14 steps were done according to procedure. He pointed out that Mamabolo’s legal team did not argue the test results.
