MORE than R18 000 was raised for Comrades Marathon charities at an auction of artworks created to reflect the spirit of the race.

Two paintings by Henk Vos proved to be the bestsellers at the event staged at the Bonitas Comrades Expo at the Durban Exhibition Centre the Friday before the race. His paintings, which sold for R3 000 and R10 250, respectively, were bought by the Comrades Marathon Association.

“One will become a focal point in the Comrades House Museum, and the other will be presented by Comrades to the AIMS (the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) in Greece at the Athens Marathon later this year,” Sian Theron, curator of the Comrades Museum, said.

The auction was conducted by John Kirk of John Kirk Auctioneers after Stella Khumalo, head of the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Tourism, presented the winners of the Comrades Art Competition with their prizes.

The professional artists’ category was won by Henk Vos, of Botha’s Hill, while Pietermaritzburg’s Beauty Sekete took top honours in the emerging artists’ section.

Kirsten Diedrick, a Grade 10 pupil at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, was the winner in the schools’ section. Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High was also the winner of the school prize for the most entries.
