Comrades: change in route at start of marathon

2010-03-17 00:00

THERE has been a slight change to the route at the start of the 2010 Comrades Marathon.

“The slight route change will allow for an easier flow for the runners and result in a quicker exit from the Pietermaritzburg City Centre,” Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) spokesman Craig Fry said yesterday.

Fry said the new route from the starting point will proceed down Chief Albert Luthuli (Commercial) Road, turn right into Alexandra Road, and proceed to the Ritchie Road-Alexandra Road intersection.

The runners will then turn left into Ritchie Road and proceed to Washington Road where they will join the regular route.

Fry said the new route is much wider and should alleviate congestion. “Runners are cautioned to the fact that there are three traffic control ‘speed bumps’ in Alexandra Road, but this should not cause any problems as this part of the road is very well lit,” he said.

The final route distance is expected to change by about 300 metres from the 2009 route.

About 23 565 entrants are expected to participate on May 30.

“This is the second largest ‘potential’ field of runners in history of the Comrades Marathon, as in 2000 we had 24 500 at the start,” said Johan van Staaden, the race director.

“The cut-off date for runners to submit their qualifying details is April 26, 2010, and failure to do this will result in the runner’s entry being rejected,” he said.
