Comrades: entries open from 9?am today, but hurry

2010-09-01 00:00

THOSE planning to run the 86th Comrades Marathon next year should be quick off the mark as the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) will start taking entries from 9 am today and only 18 000 runners will be allowed to take part. The closing date for entries is November 30.

This year there were more than 23 500 participants who battled their way from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, an inflated number due to the interest generated by the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

CMA marketing co-ordinator Thami Vilakazi said the number will be cut down this year.

“If we get to 18 000 people before the cut off date entries will be closed, and that will be final,” said Vilakazi.

He said participants should be 20 years old and above.

“That is the requirement of Athletic South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal Athletic and International Amateur Athletic Federation,” said Vilakazi.

Vilakazi said South Africans who are interested in participating in the competition will be charged R270, while foreigners will be charged between R1 300 and R1 400.

“Participants should belong to athletic clubs and be active athletes. But those who are not under clubs can enter then later join clubs.

“It takes six months to train for the event, which is enough time,” said Vilakazi.

Those interested can either drop their entries at Comrades Marathon offices in Connaught Road near Scottsville Nedbank Plaza or do it online through
