Comrades fever hits Durban

2010-05-28 00:00

COMRADES fever has hit Durban, with race registration officially opening at the Bonitas Comrades Expo at the Durban Exhibition Centre yesterday.

Families ambled through the expo, looking at stalls dedicated to sporting equipment, food and leisure, while a small queue formed at the registration station.

Runners have until 5 pm tomorrow to collect their race numbers, final race instructions and goodie bags.

Popular music blared while visitors to the expo were given the opportunity to have their cholesterol checked or enjoy a shoulder or leg massage.

Comrades runners could also get into the Fifa World Cup spirit by interacting with Zakumi and the Diski dancers.

Across the road at Durban’s Hilton Hotel, Comrades bosses gave the 2010 race the thumbs- up, saying it is all systems go for the weekend.

According to Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) general manager Gary Boshoff, the 2010 Comrades took over two years to prepare for.

He said the CMA hopes the new 2010 medal will attract runners who may have stopped running the marathon. “For Comrades stalwarts, this will be one medal they don’t have,” he said.

The CMA confirmed that an estimated 18 000 runners will line up at the start on Sunday.
