Comrades: renewed council support

2008-05-15 00:00

The Msunduzi Municipality and the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) announced a new three-year sponsorship deal that will see council increase its support for the race, whose home base has been the city for the past 86 years.

At a function at Comrades House yesterday, CMA chairman Dave Dixon thanked the municipality for its continued support.

“For many years, the Msunduzi Municipality has supported the Comrades Marathon, including hosting the VIP area on race day. But this was done on an ad hoc basis, year by year.

“Now we have a three-year contract in place that will give the CMA greater financial security, which in turn means a better race for everyone,” he said.

Mayor Zanele Hlatswayo said the relationship adds weight to the status of Pietermaritzburg as a sporting centre of excellence. Hlatshwayo thanked the CMA, saying, “you’ve done very good work for the city”, adding that the agreement is part of a long-term strategy to make sport an integral part of the municipality.
