Comrades wins top sport participation award

2012-02-28 00:00

THE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) bagged yet another impressive accolade in one of the most notable awards functions of the sporting business.

The annual Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards honours the best of the country’s sporting sector, which covers sponsorship, marketing, new media, publishing, advertising and design.

The who’s who of the sporting world attended the event, which was held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg recently.

The competition, which is in its second year, consisted of 16 award categories that were adjudicated by a judging panel featuring leading figures in sport.

Led by former South African rugby captain Bob Skinstad, the panel included Danny Jordaan, CEO of 2010 Fifa World Cup organising committee, Gideon Sam, president of the South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, and Nunu Ntshingila, CEO of Ogilvy South Africa.

The Comrades Marathon won the Sport Participation Event of the Year award. It was up against contenders such as the Bidvest Unity Walk, Discovery 702 Walk the Talk, JP Morgan Corporate Challenge, Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.

Gary Boshoff, CMA general manager, said the award was a huge vote of confidence in the Comrades Marathon.

“It is notable that the industry recognises the power and allure of our iconic race as an event that not just captures the imagination of the world, but also goes mile for mile in uniting runners on the race track.

“We are deeply grateful for this acknowledgement.”
