Con man: Gets suspended sentence

2011-12-05 00:00

CONVICTED fraudster Johan Fifield (44), who pleaded guilty to conning a local businessman out of cash by pretending to be a representative of the Labour Department, was given an 18 month suspended sentence by Pietermaritzburg magistrate, Bessie du Preez.

Fifield gave evidence expressing remorse for his actions.

He admitted in a statement that he had defrauded a Retief Street businessman, Kershwin Padayachee, of R1 380 cash on October 22 by falsely claiming to be a labour broker working with the Labour Department.

Fifield said, “I advised Mr Padayachee that in order for his business to comply with the department of labour regulations, he would have to pay me the sum of R1 380 which would cover the labour costs for the compliance.

“Mr Padayachee paid me the sum and I left his premises.

“I was arrested a couple of days later on a charge of fraud,” he added.
