Con man held for fake job offer

2013-08-07 00:00

A MAN impersonating a Health Department employee was arrested on Monday after he allegedly tried to con a woman out of R3 000 in a recruitment scam.

The man allegedly offered the woman employment as a nurse.

He met the woman on Monday at Grey’s Hospital where he produced a contract and offered her a job.

He then asked the woman for R3 000 in cash for the job.

The woman questioned the suspect and when she realised it was a scam, asked security for assistance.

The suspect was apprehended and later arrested by the Town Hill police.

The Department of Health verified that the contract the suspect presented was a false document.

Sam Mkhwanazi from the Department of Health praised the woman who alerted authorities about the scam. “The department would also like to inform the public that government positions are not sold, but are for free for deserving and qualified applicants, and that government positions are advertised internally or externally, depending on the prevailing circumstances.

“Short-listed applicants are subjected to a process of interviews and the successful candidate is then appointed. Should any member of the public be approached by anyone purporting to represent the department, they must report this to the nearest police station.”

A case of fraud is being investigated and the suspect will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s court today. The police have urged anyone who has fallen victim to a similar scam to contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Mbongeni Dlungwane at his office on 033 845 7794 or on 084 915 8852.
