Concern: Readers offer help for toddler

2008-09-04 00:00

Yesterday’s story of the neglected toddler found covered in faeces and severely malnourished has touched the hearts of readers, who have asked if any help is needed for the baby and other children in the family.

The toddler’s grandmother said she had no intention of hurting him, but she cannot cope as she is caring for seven children. There is no one employed in their family.

The two-year-old is being treated at Edendale Hospital. Hospital PRO Samke Mncube thanked the public for its concern. She said the hospital’s social work department is dealing with the matter and the child will eventually be referred to the Welfare Department.

“At the moment, the hospital cannot accept any donations for the baby, but the details of public interest will be forwarded to the department of Welfare,” Mncube said.
